With web pages becoming more and more visual, the ratio of text to pictures is shrinking and when search engines are trying to determine the topic of a page they might need a little help. The search engines top choice for gathering information about pictures on your website had been for some time now the alt attribute that is a part of img element. The original intent for this attribute was to provide information about the picture in a case when the image could not be loaded. Since our connection became faster and more reliable we might have neglected this functionality, especially since typing the picture description is time consuming and tedious and would carry very little benefit if the pictures are almost always loaded and shown on your pages. Unfortunately search engines cannot "see" the pictures and interpret the image (at least not yet). The search engines decided to "motivate" website creators to include this information by rewarding a better score to pages that include this information and ignore those that do not. Additionally when somebody is looking for images, the search engine's index of choice is the alt attribute content (if you don't believe it, run an image search, chose one of the top images, go the the source page and inspect the alt attribute content to see how close it is to the keyword that you entered in the search box). To help with either fixing existing pages or creating new ones with a valid and helpful alt attribute we created "alt Tag Wizard", an html editor/creator that allows users to populate or edit the alt attribute content for images that will be shown on a webpage.
